Jack cocked his head to the left and moved it back to the right. He could feel his locks moving, and heard the clink of the beads and coins. He knew he had moved. But there was no sign of it in the mirror. At least, he thought it was a mirror. He could see the exact replica of the room he was in, reversed, but there was nothing in the air between the room he was in and the other one. Even though it was not really a mirror. This room was less decorated, more damaged, with fewer tools and ornaments. But he knew somehow his room was a mirror to the other room. The other room he was not in.

He took a step forward to peer at the tiny line on the floor without wood. There was a bit of silver there. The kind of dun silver found on the backs of mirrors. He did not reach out and touch the space above it. Instead, he breathed out and saw his breath cling to the invisible glass, cutting off a small piece of his view of the other room.

He repeated his actions, fogging up most of the area where he could see. He watched the tiny clouds drip down the air, and was surprised, but not scared or startled, to make out the new face on the other side in the other room as they disappeared.

James blinked at Jack’s smile. He took a step back, as did Jack, their steps in tandem, like a pair of dancers.

James leaned forward while Jack tilted his head back; James held up his right hand slowly while Jack held out his left, palm-up.

They stepped forward together. Their hands reached out, slowly, as they walked. Jack knew the mirror had been there before but, now, it wouldn’t be in his way anymore.

Their fingertips met, curving around to hold onto hands, pulling forward to reach around bodies.

In the tiny divide between the two different mirrored rooms, they held each other, safe in the skerry of a dream.
